Falls Prevention – Winter Walking

November is Falls Prevention Month. It’s also the time of year when the weather creates a few challenges to consider when walking outdoors for exercise…

Check the forecast!

Dress in layers and don’t forget a hat, scarf and gloves.

Be visible!

Consider wearing bright colours or reflective gear.

Check your kicks!

Choose warm, supportive footwear with a non-slip tread.

Get gadgety!

Consider a cane or walking poles with an ice pick attachment or ice-grippers for your footwear.

Keep your eyes peeled!

Stick to clear, designated paths and sidewalks. Remember, hazards like black ice aren’t always easy to spot. Vision impaired? Consider walking with a friend.

Hands out!

To stay better balanced, keep your hands free from your pockets. This will also give you a chance to break your fall if necessary.

Be reasonable!

Slowly progress your distance and time spent walking as you’re able.

Enjoy some water!

Remember, dehydration can contribute to dizziness, which can increase your fall risk.

Mind your meds!

Stay in touch with your healthcare provider. Remember, there are some medications that can increase your risk of falling. Understanding your health and what you’re taking to manage it is empowering.

Bonus tidbit:

Did you know the last step is the most common place for a fall to occur? So, be mindful if on steps or stairs and use a handrail if one’s available!

Happy walking – stay safe and have fun!
