What Is Custom Joint Bracing and Who Is It For
A brace can protect an injured joint or settle pain enough that you can keep moving while it recovers. It can also give you the confidence to get back on the ice or through a full shift. Braces are used for knee, ankle, wrist and back problems. You may not need one at all, and the right brace depends on what's going on in the joint, what you want to do and how it fits your body.
Every bracing recommendation at Stride starts with an assessment. One of our physiotherapists looks at your injury or condition, talks through your goals and tells you whether a brace is likely to help. Sometimes the better plan is strength and movement work through physiotherapy without a brace. When a brace does make sense, we'll help you find the right one, custom or off-the-shelf.
What We Treat with Custom and Off-the-Shelf Braces
Ankle Injuries and Ankle Pain
Wrist Injuries and Wrist Pain
Back Pain That Limits Work or Activity

Do You Need a Custom Knee Brace or an Off-the-Shelf One
If your knee pain comes from osteoarthritis that mainly affects one side of the knee, or you're returning to sport or demanding work after an ACL or other ligament injury, a custom brace may suit you better. It's also worth considering if off-the-shelf braces haven't fit or stayed comfortable for you.
We offer OssKin knee braces, designed and 3D-printed in Canada from a 3D scan of your leg. Because each one is built to your shape, it's lightweight, fits closely and is designed to stay in place. OssKin describes its patented Asymotion hinge as following the knee through all three planes of motion, including rotation, rather than bending it along a fixed track. Its Evoke and Provoke braces are built for osteoarthritis and ligament injuries.
An off-the-shelf brace is often a simpler, less expensive place to start, and it may be all you need. We'll help you choose the right style and size from brands including Thuasne, Push Med and Bauerfeind, then check the fit before you leave.
What a Bracing Assessment and Fitting Involves
Wear clothing that lets us see and move the joint, such as shorts if it's your knee. If you already own a brace, bring it along.
A conversation about your joint
We'll ask how the problem started, what makes it better or worse, your health history and what you want to get back to, whether that's skating, lifting or a full day on your feet.A physical assessment
Depending on the joint, this may include movement, strength, joint and balance testing. It rules out anything that needs a doctor's attention first and shows what the joint needs from a brace.A clear recommendation
You'll hear whether a brace is likely to help, which type suits you and why. If you don't need one, we'll say so and explain what we'd do instead.Scanning or fitting
For a custom OssKin knee brace, we take a 3D scan of your leg and the brace is built from it. For an off-the-shelf brace, we choose the style and size with you and check the fit before you go.Wearing it and building strength
We'll show you how to put the brace on and when to wear it, then check in on how it's working. Strength and control work continues alongside it, so you can rely on the brace less over time, or only when you need it.
Are Braces Covered by Insurance?
Some extended health plans cover part of the cost of a brace, especially when it's medically recommended. Coverage varies from plan to plan, and some require a prescription from your doctor before they'll pay. We're happy to provide the documentation you need and help you understand your options before you decide.
You don't need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist in Saskatchewan, so you can book a bracing assessment directly. Check with your plan ahead of time if it needs a prescription for the brace itself.
If your injury happened at work or in a car accident, bring your WCB or SGI claim number. We communicate with both, and whether a brace is covered under your claim is their decision.
You'll know the cost of any brace we supply before you commit to it. You're also free to buy a recommended brace from another supplier, and that choice won't change the care you get from us.

Our Approach to Joint Bracing in Swift Current
A brace works best as one part of a plan, rather than a long-term replacement for strength and movement. At Stride, that means:
- You'll hear whether a brace is likely to help before you spend money on one, and you'll hear it when you don't need one.
- Your brace is chosen for your joint, your goals and how it fits, with custom OssKin braces built from a scan of your own leg.
- Your physiotherapist keeps working on strength and control alongside the brace, so you can use it less over time.
Stride is in Swift Current, so a custom knee brace scan and fitting doesn't mean a drive to Regina or Saskatoon. The same scan-and-fit approach is behind our custom orthotics. If you see more than one of our clinicians, they talk to each other about your care, and we can coordinate with your family doctor or specialist when it helps.
